The museum was designed by Chinese design company MAD and built by Huhehaote Construction. It houses collections relating to the local history of Ordos and the surrounding area. It is designed in a large, open-plan space over 40,000 square feet; the design was influenced by both the Gobi desert and the work of Buckminster Fuller. There are 6 levels of exhibition space.
